The release date for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play has been announced. This highly anticipated little gadget will be hitting the high streets in the UK on 28th March and if you are looking for a SIM free version it will set you back somewhat over £500, but for what promises to be the greatest of all gadgets for smartphone gaming, many will consider this to be a price that is well worth paying.
The phone was officially unveiled at the Mobile World Congress and it will include a full implementation of the latest Android platform, Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Essentially the first impression is one of an Android based Playstation. The gaming controller is mounted on a slide-out panel which reveal ‘official’ Playstation controllers along with touch sensitive joystick type controllers. Many familiar titles will be available by the scheduled launch date and these include many of the old favourites. Fifty game titles will be available and all of these games are produced in true High definition with refresh rates of 60 frames per second; certainly they look impressive.
For what is essentially a smartphone, the game play is certainly immersive and there is no other smartphone on the market that comes anywhere near close if gaming is your scene. Even from just a smartphone viewpoint it is am impressive gadget offering everything that we have come to expect from the Xperia series of smartphones. There is a superb four inch touch screen, an excellent five megapixel camera, and many of the other features that make this series ideal for social networking.
But when this phone really takes off is when you slide out the gaming controller and you discover just what that superfast 1GHz Snapdragon processor is capable off, particularly when performance enhanced by a dedicated graphics controller in the form of an embedded Adreno GPU processor. Battery life is also a pleasant surprise in a gadget that delivers this much punch in high speed 3D gaming. Perhaps, as Sony claim, this really will change the way in which we think about smartphones. You can now order the Xperia Play at www.phones4u.co.uk.
